Do you feel the same way? Somewhere these 5 values have been around for 10 years. But nobody really knows them and they don't play a role in day-to-day work anyway. Do you still have the "values posters" on the wall or does the screensaver play out your values and vision? Oh well, you have it all on the social intranet, so much the better.
It is rather peculiar. Every company has "its values" and yet we continually hear this statement:
"We do not live by our values."
We wonder why this is the case, especially when values are currently in such high demand. Nowadays, nothing works without a "purpose." Even our colleagues from corporate strategy are now interested in "the soft topics" because they have realised that values and culture somehow play a role in their area as well. HR colleagues are naturally interested, as they cannot attract suitable candidates otherwise. Additionally, the CEO and CFO are increasingly using the "W-word" because sustainability reports and ESG ratings are forcing them to rethink. There is movement, though not yet consistently enough.
Over the coming weeks, we aim to explore why discussing values has become so important for companies and why living by those values remains so challenging. To this end, we have identified initial themes and areas of tension:
#2 Are there too many values? When does each concept apply?
#3 Value concepts and value semantics: Why are there so few "standards" in practice?
#4 Mere nomenclature or deeper meaning: What do we actually call our new values?
#5 Values or growth? How do values relate to metrics?
#6 Top-down or bottom-up? Can values be implemented?
We warmly invite you to share your experiences with us.
